- A long day riding on the improved roads is 200 miles.
- A long day on the graded roads is 150 miles.
- A long day on unimproved back roads is 100 miles.
- We highly recommend Big Bend as a place to visit. It is much more fun for dual sports, but we saw quite a few sport bikes and cruisers enjoying the scenery on the main roads. It takes several days to explore the park, plan for a full week if you are going to take back roads in Terlingua Ranch as we did.
- Big Bend is a "no brainer" in terms of navigation. All you need to take is one of the maps of the park (supplied at the park entrance) to find your way around. If you plan to take other back roads BE SURE to at least have the USGS area maps which can be obtained thru the park service or at the Terlingua Ranch office. We also recommend a basic GPS unit along with a good compass but of course practice using these prior to your trip.
- We did not eat out during our trip. The last thing we wanted to worry about was our stomachs. Instead we ate basic foods and brought along lunch and snacks on our daily trips. Plan to bring your food as there are no groceries in the area (we wondered where the locals bought there food).
- We advise you to check ahead for reservations and weather conditions. There are times when the area is crowded and the weather can be extreme.
- DON'T GET HURT. Medical help is marginal at best and it's a long way to the nearest hospital.
- No cell phone service in the area.
- We took a short wave radio for entertainment (no local stations).
- It's probably safe to cross into Mexico, we saw many people doing it. The safest place to leave your car or motorcycle is at the Lajitas crossing. The other crossings were remote and we would not leave our gear and bikes in those areas.
- To us this was a real adventure, we were laid back and really enjoyed the outdoors and remoteness of the area.
- Don't expect trees, night life, great restaurants, fancy accommodations, unless you stay at Lajitas. Do expect cowboys, dust, rocks, wild animals, solitude, and great dual sport riding.
